COMING SOON 2018 | NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
ABOUT THE EVENT
A Taste of Indonesia
As proud and active students, we (PPI Newcastle) are inspired to create an event to promote diverse Indonesian culture globally through informative yet engaging and entertaining event. Many cultural exchange initiatives have been ubiquitously established in the city of London but very few or almost none has been introduced in other cities particularly the North of UK. Thus, we take the responsibility to hold such event in Newcastle, the largest city in the North of UK.

This event, that was last held on 3, 4 (Bazaar) and 7 May 2017 (Performance Night), will serve as a platform for Indonesian students studying abroad to take responsibility of their nation and participate in preserving and introducing their culture to international level. In addition, Discover Indonesia will be the actual training ground for the students for organisational skills and other interpersonal skills.
Discover Indonesia was first established in 2014 and by gaining confidence from positive responses and success it has generated, we decided to turn Discover Indonesia into an annual event. Generally, Discover Indonesia is held for three days; consisting of two days of bazaar and closed with the spectacular performance night. Musical and traditional drama performances will enlighten the performance night. We hope that this year, Discover Indonesia will enhance our magnificent culture in larger scale to the diverse people in Newcastle.

Discover Indonesia 2017: The Mighty Gadjah Mada

Bazaar
PROGRAMS

Discover Indonesia will begin with an Indonesian cultural bazaar, located at the heart of Newcastle University. During the two-day event, visitors will be able to join traditional culture workshops, traditional games and get involved into knowing more about what our nation has in store. Moreover, traditional food and beverages will be able for visitors to try and enjoy their lunch while watching our Indonesian Society students perform traditional music and dancing. The promotion of Indonesian tourism will also be showcased, where a collection
of photographs and artwork made by our Indonesian students will be displayed in one of the stalls.
This year, the bazaar will be held under the theme of Indonesian patriotism, especially during the era of our proclamation, dating back from 1945 onwards. Along with this theme, we will bring audiences back to the historical times of our country. Our aim for this year’s event is
to reminisce and remember what our national heroes have done and to commemorate their efforts they have put to our glorious nation.

Performance Night
The highlight of the event will be the performance night, held in the Domain in Northumbria University. Carrying our efforts from last year’s show, we will bring to you a story of Gadjah Mada, a legendary hero which reigns in times back to the era of the kingdoms in Indonesia. Dating back to the 14th century, the performance will present a tale of the battle to unite the Indonesian Archipelago under
the age of Kerajaan Madjapahit (Madjapahit Kingdom). Along the show, audiences will be brought through a spectacle of Indonesian dances, music and tradition.
The performance this year will be packed with action drama, live percussion and an extravagant display of lighting effects. Audiences will also be given a goody hamper and sponsors will be given a commemorative gift during the event. Our performance nights have always been the peak of the series
of events, therefore we always expect and encourage a large turnout during this event.
